The seed was inadvertently planted in 2004 when I returned to college to finish my delayed Bachelor’s Degree. Working full-time, the choice of electives for this evening college student was few and far between. I decided to take a Graphic Design course. Even though I thought I had no interest in design (I’d been a diehard freelance copywriter since 17), it was better than my other options and it required no books, so I was happy to save a little money. 

And so began my unexpected love affair with graphic design. From my first business card layout to my final exam in a complete corporate identity, I devoured books on PhotoShop, InDesign, Illustrator, web design – anything that would feed the hunger designing in this class had created. 

Shortly after graduation, realizing I now offered the full package: full advertising, copywriting and design services, I decided to test my skills in a freelance capacity. I purchased a business license in Graphic Art Design, a reseller’s license, and a web domain and opened The WriteOne Creative Services out of my home. 

My first design “job” was actually free. I wanted an opinion that was without prejudice. My family and friends said I was good, but was I? I volunteered to re-do my daughter’s school’s website and from there, it became a whirl wind adventure. Instantly my work allowed me to became the preferred vendor for two charter schools and thirteen private schools doing websites, brochures, corporate identity, expanding into promotional items, screen-printing and embroidered products. 

It is now four years later and I’ve never once paid to advertise my company. Every single one of my clients has come from referrals. From statewide and national associations to Canne Film Festival movie candidates and retail establishments, my clients are as varied as their concepts. It’s been like that shampoo commercial: she told two friends and they told two friends and so on and so on. 

I do a lot of design work for free for not-for-profits that support the military, children, or animals. I believe in karma- in paying it forward. If you have the opportunity to help someone in need, why wouldn’t you? 

With a layoff from my “day” Marketing Director job in June 2008, I decided not to seek other outside employment and turn my little side business into my full-time career. I’m still working out of a home office and that suits me just fine. No overhead allows me to provide the most reasonable rates I can to my customers.
